Referrals

At the Cancer Rehabilitation Foundation (PINC & STEEL), we have a nationwide network of experienced Cancer Rehab Physiotherapists ready to support your patients. Our simplified referral process ensures they’re connected quickly with the right care — making it easy for both healthcare professionals and patients to access the support they need.

When to Refer

Anyone with any cancer type, at any stage, can be referred and will be connected with a certified cancer rehabilitation physiotherapist - without long wait times.

A medical referral plays a vital role in ensuring access to care does not depend on a person’s ability to advocate for themselves.

Patients experiencing issues affecting their physical function, wellbeing, or quality of life can benefit from our support.

How to Refer

Referring is easy:

Use our online referral portal
Include the main reason for referral and any specific concerns
Our Patient Navigator will connect the referral to the nearest certified provider

Access Pathways

Pathway 1: Rehab Access - Universal service pathway:

Connect patients directly with certified cancer rehabilitation physiotherapists nationwide. Available to anyone with cancer who can self-fund or has insurance, providing fast access to expert support with no long wait times.

Pathway 2: Foundation Financial Assistance - Targeted charitable support:

Targeted support to help cover the cost of care for those who need it most. Financial Assistance is not automatic and is subject to referral and eligibility criteria.

Financial Eligibility

To be eligible for Foundation Financial Aid for individual sessions, patients must meet all of the following:

1. Diagnosis

Confirmed malignant cancer diagnosis within the past 3 years

2. Receiving or has received one of the following:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Radiation therapy

What is Not Funded

To ensure sustainability and avoid duplication of public services, funding does not support:

Lymphoedema management as a primary service
Complex urinary or faecal incontinence as a primary condition

What Happens Next?

Every patient starts with an initial assessment – during this session, an Oncology Physiotherapist will: assess the patient’s needs, goals, and treatment impact, create a personalised self-management plan, recommend the most appropriate rehabilitation pathway.

If additional support is needed, the physio can apply for further funded sessions on the patient’s behalf. Our small group rehabilitation programmes are also fully funded.

Service Locations
PINC & STEEL services are available nationwide — from Northland to Southland — through our network of certified Cancer Rehab Physiotherapists. For patients in rural or remote areas, or those facing travel challenges, we also offer online sessions to ensure access to support no matter where they live.
